The first recorded Tarot cards were discovered in the 15th century in Northern Italy. At that time, the four suits were supplemented by trumps with allegorical illustrations. Over the years the ‘Tarot of Marseilles’ was born, laying down the basic structure of the Tarot’s 78 cards.

After the birth of the Tarot de  Marseille, it became one of the most popular cards in Europe. However, in the 18th century, it declined in France, but spread to Italy, giving birth to such well-known styles as Piedmontese and Milanese tarot cards.

Fedinando Gumppenberg, a German aristocrat and publisher, introduced the advanced printing techniques and aesthetic tastes of Germany to Milan at the time, and combined them with the famous ‘southern style’ of tarot to produce a classic deck that is unique in the history of tarot.

The most important feature of this deck is that it combines the unique features of the faces of Florence and Sicily with the ‘neo-classical’ movement that emerged in the 19th century, creating a deck that is unique in the history of the Tarot with its delicate and simple brushstrokes. The overall neo-classical style, the overall proportion of the figures is relatively small compared to the deck, the strokes of sobriety and spontaneity, gentle and natural, in contrast to the style of the Milan Tarot deck.

The Court cards maintains a fresh style, but compared to the Marseille style of the Milanese Tarot deck, some of the cards have been altered considerably, and some of the cards even have a ‘back’ shape, which is very unique.

Note: The pip cards are the most interesting part of the Tarocchi Lombardi. It clearly does not follow the traditional arrangement and shape of the Marseille Tarot, but instead adopts the Florentine and other southern styles, which have become a classic of the generation.

This restoration, using the technology of old photo restoration, fine repair of the phenomenon of yellowing paper and a number of stains and blemishes, etc., and through a number of versions of the comparison, re-precisely fill in the colours, completely corrected the other versions of the yellowing of the colours of the problem of dim colours, restoring the original style of the original masterpieces.
